A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the Antrim County Election Division on February 5, 2025. The request, filed by North Michigan News, sought detailed information about all candidates running in the upcoming election.
North Michigan News, a media organization dedicated to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, requested the following records under the Michigan Freedom of Information Act § 15.231 et seq., preferably in electronic format:
A list of all candidates running for office in the forthcoming election was requested. This includes each candidate's first name, middle name, last name, the office they are running for, jurisdiction of the office, and party affiliation.
Additionally, North Michigan News also asked for complete contact information for each candidate. This includes their address, phone number, and email address.
As members of the media committed to gathering and reporting news to the public, we at North Michigan News believe that access to public records is essential for us to fulfill our professional responsibilities. These include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public. Given our role in disseminating information, we believe we are eligible for a fee waiver as media professionals.
We await a response from Antrim County Election Division regarding this request.
