The Northern Michigan University women's wrestling team is set to host duals against Grand Valley State this weekend. The event will take place at Vandament Arena on Saturday, February 8, starting at 6 p.m. Admission is free, and fans are encouraged to support the team. For those unable to attend in person, the matches will be live-streamed on FloWrestling.
The NMU wrestling team's Instagram account, @nmu_wrestling, will provide updates before and after the event.
In their last outing, NMU made a successful debut at Vandament Arena by defeating UW-Oshkosh Titans with a score of 30-17. This victory marked their fourth dual win of the season. Notable performances included Mickaela Keane (180) winning by fall at 2:26, Kailyn Garrett (207) by fall at 3:30, Yu Sakamoto (117) by tech fall at 1:17, and victories by forfeit from Samantha Chaon (138), Alissa Caltagirone (145), and Sophia Bassino (160).
Yu Sakamoto holds a national ranking of 12th in the 117 weight class according to The Open Mat and earned a world champion title at the U23 World Championships in Albania last October. Alissa Caltagirone is ranked 13th in the 145 weight class, while Sophia Bassino ranks 19th in the 160 weight class. Kailyn Garrett is ranked 20th in the 207 weight class.
NMU's wrestling program boasts ten regional top-5 finishes in its history, including Diana Dzasezava's win in 2023. Over its three-year history, the program has produced two All-Americans and twelve Scholar All-Americans.
