State Rep. John Roth | Michigan House Republicans
State Representative John Roth expressed his support for House Resolution 19 on Thursday. The resolution aims to prevent communities with sanctuary policies and those that do not cooperate with federal immigration officials from receiving additional state funding. Speaker Matt Hall, R-Richland Township, introduced the resolution, which takes effect immediately. It specifies that no bill including funding for sanctuary communities will be voted on in the House.
Roth, R-Interlochen, stated, "Any community that refuses to cooperate with federal immigration officials should expect the same cold shoulder from state government come budget time." He further added, "The feds are trying to keep our communities safe, and these rogue cities are doing whatever they can to protect these violent criminals and let them right back out onto our streets. Speaker Hall took a stand today and made it clear that any community that prioritizes illegal immigrants over its own citizens will have their access to state funding cut off at the source."
This new House resolution aligns with several federal initiatives led by President Donald Trump and Border Czar Tom Homan, focusing on deporting violent criminals. Recently, President Trump signed the Laken Riley Act, named after a Georgia nursing student killed by a Venezuelan alien. This act mandates federal detention of illegal immigrants accused of theft, burglary, assaulting law enforcement officers, and any crime causing death or serious bodily injury.
Michigan has experienced violence involving illegal aliens. Last year in Grand Rapids, an illegal immigrant murdered a 25-year-old woman. The individual had reentered the United States illegally after being deported by the Trump Administration in 2020. Before his deportation, he faced multiple arrests in Kent County and was convicted of illegal entry into a residence. He also had an outstanding bench warrant in Grand Rapids for suspected drunk driving and driving without a valid license in 2020.
The resolution does not affect constitutionally required revenue sharing for municipalities.
