On November 2, the Northern Michigan University (NMU) volleyball team recognized its 2024 senior class with a match against Parkside. Among the seniors honored was Jacqueline Smith, a fifth-year player from St. Germaine, Wisconsin. Smith has played in 466 sets as a Wildcat, achieving 1,887 kills and 1,240 digs. Her accolades include receiving the GLIAC Freshman of the Year award and being selected for the All-GLIAC first team each year of her career. Notably, in 2024, she broke the program's all-time kills record.
Smith is actively involved with Athletes in Action, a Christian group on campus where athletes meet weekly to reflect on their faith. As one of the group's leaders, Smith values the connections formed during these meetings and appreciates sharing experiences with fellow athletes.
Upon graduating, Smith plans to return to her hometown for some time off before pursuing employment and her dream of owning horses.
Reflecting on her college experience, Smith treasures the friendships and memories made with her teammates. She recalled a significant memory from her freshman year: "we had success that year, and it was during COVID so it was a weird year but it was such a fun time."
Smith also shared insights into how her faith influences her performance: "The way I play is because I have freedom knowing that no matter how I perform, God loves me. He doesn't love me any more for the games I play my best in, and he doesn't love me any less for the games I may not perform the best."
The Wildcats are set to compete in postseason play with a GLIAC Quarterfinal match against Parkside on November 20 at Vandament Arena.
