The Northern Michigan University (NMU) Wildcats women's lacrosse team secured a significant victory over the College of Saint Benedict Bennies with a commanding performance at Saint Joseph, Minnesota.
Demonstrating their offensive prowess, the Wildcats scored seven goals during the second quarter, maintaining the lead throughout the match. This marked the fifth instance this season that NMU has reached or surpassed seven goals in a single quarter.
Key players Josie Lakosky and Taylor Priestley led the scoring efforts. Lakosky achieved a "double hat trick," tying her career-best with seven goals, while Priestley recorded four goals, marking a personal best in a single game. Wildcat defenders, guided by Dayna Carlson, executed a robust defensive strategy which contributed to a significant 11-goal lead.
Alongside Lakosky and Priestley's contributions, Camryn Mayer, Sophie Langsdale, Hannah Jabas, and Laine Stanton each added goals. Stanton and Mayer also managed two assists each.
Throughout the game, the Wildcats outshot their opponents 29-22, consistently creating scoring opportunities with 23 shots on target compared to the Bennies' nine. Both teams successfully completed all clear attempts. However, NMU had an advantage in ground balls at 15-14, forced four turnovers against Bennies' two, despite recording fewer turnovers (6-9).
NMU will advance in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play next weekend, aiming to face both Grand Valley State University (GVSU) and Davenport.
The game began with the Bennies winning the draw, but NMU quickly responded as Lakosky scored from a free-position shot. After a Bennie equalizer, Stanton executed a last-second maneuver closing the first quarter 3-1 in NMU's favor.
The Wildcats dominated the second quarter as Lakosky struck early, followed by Langsdale, extending the lead to 5-1. Priestley joined the scoring spree, while Lakosky completed her hat trick to make it 8-1. The team's momentum continued with contributions from Stanton and a fifth goal by Lakosky, concluding the quarter at 10-1.
In the third quarter, Wildcats goalkeeper Zoe Montgomery made a critical save, Lakeosky added another goal, and despite two Bennie goals, Priestley completed her hat trick. NMU led 15-4 into the fourth quarter with a final goal from Lakosky, cementing the scoreline.
