The Northern Michigan University women's lacrosse team faced a setback in their GLIAC play with a 13-9 loss to Concordia St. Paul on Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats struggled early, trailing 5-2 after the first quarter. Despite a strong comeback, scoring six of the next seven goals to lead 8-6 into the third quarter, Concordia dominated the latter stages with seven goals, securing their victory.
Josie Lakosky was a standout for the Wildcats, posting four goals and an assist. Additional contributions came from Maddi Bast, Taylor Priestley, Laine Stanton, Abby Sisson, and Hannah Jabas, each scoring once. Goalkeeper Lauren Esposito made 12 saves while allowing eight goals, and Zoe Montgomery contributed two saves against five goals.
The Golden Bears outshot Northern, 33-23, with 27 on target compared to the Wildcats' 20. Northern excelled at draw controls, winning 13 versus Concordia's 11, but trailed in ground balls, with Concordia edging them 20-18. The Wildcats struggled with turnovers, committing 21 to Concordia's 16, with 10 forced by the Bears.
The match began with Concordia scoring two early goals, quickly establishing a lead. Lakosky managed to halve the deficit with a goal, but Concordia maintained their advantage, ending the first quarter 5-2. Northern made a spirited comeback effort in the second quarter, with goals from Jabas, Stanton, Bast, and a last-second equalizer from Priestley to bring the score to 6-6 at halftime.
Esposito delivered a critical save early in the third, followed by Lakosky's successive goals, giving NMU the lead for the first time. However, Concordia responded with four unanswered goals, reclaiming control and ending the third quarter 10-8 in their favor.
In the fourth quarter, Concordia furthered their lead with two additional goals. Sisson managed to score for NMU, but with no further goals in the last nine minutes, the game concluded with a 13-9 victory for Concordia.
Following this match, NMU will travel to St. Joseph to face the College of Saint Benedict on Sunday, April 6, at 1 p.m.
