After a successful weekend competing against Wayne State, Northern Michigan University's Anika Wright and Kalina Ceglinski have been named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Swimmer and Diver of the Week.
Anika Wright, from Stillwater, Minnesota, earned her second GLIAC weekly honor following strong performances at the PEIF pool. On Friday's 'skins meet,' she contributed to a second-place finish in the 200 free relay and took on less common roles for her by swimming breaststroke in the 200 medley relay and competing in the 100 IM. She advanced to the semifinals of the skins portion. On Saturday, during Northern Michigan's 239-61 victory, Wright won all four of her events: anchoring the first-place 400 medley relay team and taking gold in the 1000 free, 500 free, and 400 IM. She led her team with 27 points that day.
Wright currently ranks as Northern Michigan’s top point scorer this season and is seventh overall among GLIAC swimmers with a total of 666.60 points after six weeks.
"Anika had a great weekend," said head coach Heidi Voigt. "She really swam with confidence and determination, and I am super excited for her to receive this award for all of her hard work she's put in!"
Kalina Ceglinski, a junior from Elmhurst, Illinois, continued her winning streak by securing victories on both diving boards over the weekend. On Friday, she scored 252.68 on the 3-meter board—over twenty points ahead of teammate Daly—and posted a score of 281.70 on the 1-meter board for an additional win. Saturday brought similar results as Ceglinski scored decisively higher than competitors: she achieved 450.00 points on the 1-meter board (a margin exceeding twenty-five points) and earned another win on the 3-meter board with a score of 278.18—more than thirty-three points ahead of second place.
Ceglinski has taken first place in every diving event through six competitions so far this season.
"Kalina has been diving very well in competitions, and it is super nice to see consistency and confidence in meets this early on in the season," said diving coach Christopher Kelly. "Looking forward to taking that consistency into our mid-season meet after a month of training!"
The Wildcats’ next competition will be at Calvin College Invite in Grand Rapids from December 4-6.
This season’s NMU Swim and Dive Athletes of the Week include Jef Leroux (Men's Swimmer), Tobie Stiles (Men's Diver), Anika Wright (Women's Swimmer), and Kalina Ceglinski (Women's Diver). Both Wright and Ceglinski have received multiple weekly honors so far this year.
