The Northern Michigan women's basketball team achieved a clean sweep at the CCA Tip-Off Classic, securing three consecutive victories in their opening weekend of play. The Wildcats capped the event with a 65-50 win over Edinboro, moving to a 3-0 record to start the season.
This result followed wins against California University of Pennsylvania (66-57) and No. 5 Gannon (60-58). The victory over Gannon marked Northern Michigan's first win against a top-five opponent since March 16, 2019.
During the match against Edinboro, NMU led for more than 70 percent of the game. The Wildcats were effective from beyond the arc, making ten out of twenty-two three-point attempts compared to Edinboro’s three out of fifteen. The team also recorded fifteen assists, three blocks, and three steals while scoring twenty-eight points in the paint.
Edinboro finished their tournament appearance without a win after facing Minnesota State University, University of North Georgia, and Northern Michigan.
Senior Jacy Weisbrod led NMU on both ends of the court throughout the weekend. She made six out of seven free throws and shot just over fifty-two percent from three-point range during the tournament. Weisbrod led all scorers with seventeen points in this game. Addison Pytleski contributed a career-high fourteen points while Sydney Whitehouse added twelve.
Weisbrod joined Alyssa Hill, Whitehouse, and Madison Schroeder in grabbing six rebounds each. Whitehouse also recorded two blocks and two steals—both highs for either team in those categories during this game.
Edinboro opened strongly with an early ten-point lead before Whitehouse put NMU on the board with a layup. After trailing by as much as ten points early in the first quarter, NMU narrowed Edinboro’s advantage to one by its end.
In the second quarter, NMU capitalized on perimeter shooting as Edinboro failed to connect from deep while Northern extended its lead behind a twelve-point run going into halftime ahead by twelve.
Although Edinboro closed within four points during a slow third quarter offensively for both teams, baskets by Whitehouse and Pytleski reestablished momentum for NMU. Late threes from CJ Romero and Weisbrod pushed their lead back up to thirteen entering the final period.
NMU continued strong defensive play into the fourth quarter—collecting key rebounds and converting turnovers into fourteen additional points—which helped secure their fifteen-point margin at final buzzer.
The Wildcats’ next games are scheduled for November 14 against Upper Iowa and November 15 versus Lewis at Wisconsin Dells.
