Northern Michigan University's women's volleyball team lost a close five-set match to Wayne State University on Saturday at Vandament Arena. The scores were 23-25, 25-21, 25-21, 9-25, and 15-17.
The match was competitive, featuring 21 ties and nine lead changes. In the decisive fifth set alone, there were ten ties and five lead changes. Northern Michigan had two match points but could not convert them as Wayne State secured the final three points for the win.
Madison York led Northern Michigan with a career-high 18 kills and a .325 hitting percentage. McKenzie Gruner contributed 13 kills. On defense, Liesl Haugen recorded 24 digs, making several important saves in the final set. Allie Barlow provided 47 assists and served four aces.
Wayne State's Kayla Giroux had a standout performance with 20 kills and seven blocks. The Warriors finished with a .274 hitting percentage compared to NMU's .173.
With this result, Northern Michigan's record moved to 9-12 overall and 6-3 in conference play. Wayne State improved to 16-4 overall and holds an 8-2 conference record.
Northern Michigan will finish its current homestand by playing against rival Michigan Tech on Tuesday, October 28 at Vandament Arena.
