Northern Michigan women’s cross country secures second at GLIAC Championships

The Northern Michigan University women's cross country team achieved a second-place finish at the GLIAC Championships held in Grand Rapids, Michigan, out of 11 competing teams. This marks the team's best result at the conference meet since 2017.

Five Northern Michigan runners placed in the top 30, with four earning All-GLIAC honors. Leading the team was Madi Szymanski, who finished 10th with a time of 21:05.7 and received First Team All-GLIAC recognition. Ashley Choponis, competing in her first conference race, placed 16th with a time of 21:38.2 and earned Second Team All-GLIAC honors.

Emma Sweeney and Lamar Gordon finished in 22nd and 23rd places, respectively, with times of 21:56.8 and 21:57.4, both also securing Second Team All-GLIAC accolades. Sophia Potter came in 27th with a time of 22:07.4. Other notable finishes included Dani VanLente (34th, 22:23.9), Beverly Harper (37th, 22:31.6), and Maija Maki-Warne (39th, 22:33.2).

Additional Northern Michigan runners in the top 60 were Madalyn Agren (56th, 22:57.0) and Lola Korpi (60th, 23:06.1).

Grand Valley State won the team title by sweeping the top six individual spots, with Lauren Kilney taking first place with a time of 20:18.2. Northern Michigan scored 80 team points, finishing ahead of Saginaw Valley State (103 points), Wayne State (113), and Michigan Tech (127).

Head coach Jenny Ryan commented, "I am so proud of this team on the great season we have had so far. The results are a testament to the hard work everyone has put in and the positive atmosphere we have created."

The Wildcats will next compete at the NCAA Midwest Regional race in Kenosha, Wisconsin, on November 8.
