State Rep. Greg Markkanen, a representative from Hancock, expressed his appreciation after the Michigan Strategic Fund (MSF) approved a $50 million grant to aid in the construction of a copper mine near Lake Superior. Markkanen emphasized the significance of utilizing the natural resources available in the Upper Peninsula (U.P.), stating, "God put copper in the U.P. for a reason. It’s nice to see the MSF recognize the importance of us taking full advantage of our unique natural resources."
Highlighting the historical connection between mining and the U.P., Markkanen remarked, "The U.P. was built on mining. With this investment, our community will start pumping out materials that will help rebuild our state and country." He further emphasized the broader impact of the project beyond copper extraction, noting the potential for job creation and economic growth in the region. Markkanen stated, "But this project is about so much more than just the copper. These mines will bring quality jobs for our communities. This project will put more kids in our schools, fill seats in our local restaurants, and add shoppers for our small businesses."
The proposed copper mine is expected to generate 380 jobs and involve a capital investment of $425,000,000 in the western U.P. However, the recipient of the grant, Highland Copper, will only receive the funding if they commit to investing three times the amount of the MSF grant.
