State Rep. Ken Borton | Michigan House Republicans
State Representative Ken Borton has publicly criticized Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel, accusing her of using her position to intimidate House Republicans and Detroit Democrats. The dispute centers around a legislative standoff over the tipped wage credit and protections for small businesses.
Borton, representing Gaylord, stated, "House Republicans aren’t playing by the normal rules anymore, and that makes partisan hacks like Dana Nessel shake in their boots." He further accused Nessel of preferring to threaten lawmakers with criminal charges rather than encouraging legislative dialogue on the issues at hand.
The controversy arose after Nessel threatened potential criminal charges against House Republicans and one Democrat for not attending House sessions. She described their absence as a willful neglect of duty. In response, House Republicans pointed out that Nessel herself has previously chosen not to enforce certain laws, which they argue could also be seen as neglecting her duties under her interpretation of state law.
Borton challenged Nessel's actions by saying, "Let her charge us; I want to look her in the eye in court while she tries to argue how my sticking up for restaurant workers and small businesses is a dereliction of duty."
