State Rep. John Roth | Michigan House Republicans
State Representative John Roth expressed concerns over the legislative priorities of Democrats during the current lame duck session. Roth criticized the focus on issues such as releasing prisoners, issuing driver's licenses to undocumented immigrants, and increasing fees, while overlooking policies that could support Michigan's tipped-wage industry.
Roth emphasized the potential consequences for the hospitality sector if legislative action is not taken. "Legislative Democrats are reaching a point where their level of greed and complete disregard for the Christmas season would put the Grinch to shame," stated Roth, R-Interlochen. He added that Democrats risk causing significant harm to tipped wage workers without intervention.
The Republican caucus has made it clear they intend to address these concerns. "The message from our caucus is clear; we’re tired of the games and the political misdirection. There is important legislation that needs consideration today. If they won’t do it, we will in January. We must vote to save our tipped wage workers," Roth asserted.
A survey conducted by the Michigan Restaurant and Lodging Association highlighted possible outcomes if changes proposed in 2018 are implemented:
- 66% of restaurant owners indicated potential layoffs.
- 20% might have to close their businesses.
- 42% would reduce operating hours.
- Over 92% would increase prices, with some predicting hikes between 20% and 25% by early 2025.
Another survey revealed that a majority of Michigan restaurant servers prefer maintaining the tipping system, with 82% supporting its retention and 79% fearing job loss if tip credits were abolished.
