State Representative Parker Fairbairn has announced that he, along with other members of the Northern Michigan Legislative Caucus, has submitted a formal letter to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The letter urges the completion of the draft Environmental Impact Study for the Great Lakes Tunnel Project and calls for the swift approval of necessary permits to commence construction.

Fairbairn, representing Harbor Springs, stated that the Great Lakes Tunnel is essential for protecting both the Great Lakes and ensuring access to affordable energy for residents and businesses in Northern Michigan. "This tunnel is a long-overdue upgrade to our energy infrastructure that will safeguard our environment while keeping energy flowing safely to the people and communities that depend on it," Fairbairn said. He emphasized that most people in Northern Michigan support this project and urged action, stating, "The study is done, the facts are clear, and it’s time to move forward."

The letter from Fairbairn and 12 other members of the bicameral Northern Michigan Caucus supports the project's goal: providing safe transportation of light crude oil and natural gas liquids while minimizing environmental risks. The representatives describe the tunnel as a sensible solution that addresses Michigan's energy needs while protecting its natural resources through modern engineering.

Initially approved in 2018 through an agreement between Michigan State and Enbridge, the tunnel project is currently undergoing federal review. The Environmental Impact Study evaluates various alternatives against the proposed plan.

Fairbairn stressed that after years of discussion and delays, progress must be made. "Northern Michigan families and employers can’t afford more political games. Let’s protect the Great Lakes and ensure Michiganders still have heat in winter and fuel at the pump," he said. He described it as a responsible plan enhancing environmental protection and energy security.
