State Representative Parker Fairbairn has expressed his support for a new bipartisan plan aimed at enhancing security and mental health initiatives in Michigan schools. The legislation, which garnered wide bipartisan backing, was developed following the 2021 shooting at Oxford High School.
“If the last decade has taught us anything, it’s that schools and state government can do so much more to keep our kids safe,” stated Fairbairn, R-Harbor Springs. “Students and teachers deserve a schooling environment that is safe and comfortable, but also prepared should tragedy strike. This plan equips our schools with the resources they need to provide quality educations in safe and effective way.”
The initiative was introduced by Fairbairn along with colleagues from both political parties. It stems from a task force that included input from educators, parents, mental health experts, and law enforcement. The goal is to enhance statewide coordination, support, and standards related to school safety and student mental health.
Key elements of the plan include:
- Schools will be required to update their safety plans every three years with input from ISD-level emergency & safety managers.
- Comprehensive training for school resource officers and staff on responding to school safety crises will be mandated.
- Expansion of OK2SAY, Michigan's confidential tip line for reporting threats or crises related to schools. Contact details will be added to student ID cards for easy access.
The legislative package includes bills HBs 4222-4223, 4225-4226, 4229, 4258-4259, and 4315. These bills are now set to move forward to the Senate for further consideration.
