State Representative Parker Fairbairn has expressed approval of the Trump Administration's decision to support a $1.15 billion project aimed at curbing the spread of Asian carp into the Great Lakes Region. The proposed initiative involves constructing barriers at the Brandon Road Lock and Dam in Joliet, Illinois. Following federal backing, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker's agreement is required for the project to proceed.
In his statement, Rep. Fairbairn emphasized the urgency of addressing what he described as a significant ecological and economic threat posed by Asian carp: “Congress told President Trump that the ongoing threat brought on by Asian carp was a crisis that couldn’t be ignored, so he reached out to Gov. Whitmer and Gov. Pritzker to offer federal assistance in addressing this looming ecological and economic disaster."
Fairbairn highlighted the importance of protecting Michigan’s fishing industry: “The Great Lakes contain the largest amount of fresh water in the world... If left unattended, the Asian carp will smother and decimate the Great Lakes as we know them. It’s not something we can afford to let happen.”
He urged swift collaboration between Illinois, Michigan, and federal authorities: “I hope the state of Illinois will take quick and decisive action to partner with Michigan and the federal government."
Recently, a resolution passed by Michigan's House called on Illinois to advance with this project. Asian carp are reportedly within 47 miles of Lake Michigan, posing a threat due to their rapid reproduction and competition with native fish species.
Rep. Fairbairn represents a district covering parts of both Upper and Lower Peninsulas including areas around Lake Michigan.
