State Rep. Cam Cavitt | Michigan House Republicans
State Representative Cam Cavitt, a Republican from Cheboygan, announced his decision to vote against House Bill 4195. The bill proposed granting driver's licenses to illegal immigrants. The measure was rejected by several House Democrats alongside House Republicans.
Cavitt issued a statement explaining his stance: "Having a driver’s license in our state is a privilege. You can’t illegally cross our border and break our laws and then expect to receive the same privileges afforded to U.S. citizens." He criticized the proposal as a "radical Democrat driver’s license plan," noting its lack of popularity even during previous Democratic control.
He further stated, "Last fall, the public was loud and clear on how illegal immigration should be handled. They elected House Republicans and President Trump to close our border and deport the dangerous gang members ravishing our communities."
Cavitt argued that foreign nationals with legitimate state IDs are already permitted to drive legally in Michigan. He questioned the necessity of allocating taxpayer funds for providing driver's licenses to those he referred to as criminals who could already possess driving capabilities through their home-country IDs.
