State Representative John Roth voted against the fiscal year 2025 budget, which was passed by the House in a late-night session. The budget, described as partisan by Roth, has been criticized for its lack of dedicated funding for Northern Michigan and includes provisions such as taxpayer-funded legal services for illegal immigrants and the hiring of hundreds of new state employees.
The budget allocates millions to special projects including $17 million for zoos in Lansing and metro Detroit, $2 million for a boxing gym, $5 million for a movie theater, and over $18 million for baseball stadiums. Roth pointed out that among 200 enhancement grants, only 12 were directed to Northern Michigan areas. Additionally, out of critical infrastructure grants awarded, just two were north of Grand Rapids.
Roth expressed his dissatisfaction stating, “If Northern Michigan got screwed last year, they took an automatic drill and drove that thing right through our hearts with this failure of a budget.” He emphasized the need for equal funding across regions saying, “We don’t want special treatment, but we do want Northern Michigan to receive the same dedicated funding that places like Detroit and Grand Rapids get.”
The Labor and Economic Opportunity budget earmarks $1 million for legal assistance to illegal immigrants while also supporting the Office of Global Michigan with unspecified funds. This office has been under scrutiny regarding its aid to illegal immigrants. Moreover, more than 500 new full-time state employees are included in this budget.
Roth voiced his concerns further: “I’m starting to believe the governor and Lansing Democrats would give taxpayer dollars to tourists before they do anything for Northern Michigan,” adding that taxpayers are being forced "to foot the bill for legal services" contrary to their interests.
