State Rep. Cam Cavitt is calling for a committee hearing on his plan to ban sanctuary city policies in Michigan following a recent tragedy. Cavitt, speaking on the issue, expressed his concerns, stating, “How many more tragedies must our communities suffer before so-called sanctuary cities realize the error of the ways and the dangerous lawlessness their misguided decisions create?”
Cavitt, along with House Republican Leader Matt Hall, urged the House Government Operations Committee to hold a hearing on their plan, House Bills 4879 and 4880, to create the Sanctuary Policy Prohibition Act and County Law Enforcement Protection Act. The proposed legislation aims to prevent municipalities from enforcing policies that hinder local law enforcement from communicating or cooperating with federal immigration officials.
Regarding the need for such actions, Cavitt emphasized, “It is absolutely unacceptable that over half of Michigan residents are facing heightened threats because their radical local units of government refuse to comply with federal law.” He stressed the importance of working with the federal government to ensure the deportation of dangerous criminals in communities.
The illegal immigrant involved in the recent tragedy in Grand Rapids had a history of legal issues in the country. He had reentered the United States illegally after being deported in 2020, with prior arrests and convictions. Cavitt highlighted the need to address such cases and collaborate with federal authorities to maintain public safety.
A recent Gallup poll revealed that a significant portion of Americans view immigration as a pressing issue, with concerns about large numbers of immigrants entering the country illegally. The call to address sanctuary city policies in Michigan reflects broader national sentiments and the need for proactive measures to ensure public safety and compliance with federal laws.
