Reps. Jack Bergman, Debbie Dingell, Julia Brownley, and VA Committee Chairman Mike Bost have introduced the Veterans Spinal Trauma Access to New Devices Act (Veterans STAND Act) in an effort to enhance care and expand access to new technologies for veterans with spinal cord injuries or disabilities (SCI/D). This legislation aims to improve the lives of veterans by providing them with personal exoskeletons and other assistive devices that promote independence and mobility.

The bill, which has gained the endorsement of the Paralyzed Veterans of America and Disabled American Veterans, emphasizes the need for the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to offer SCI/D veterans an annual assessment focused on their spinal health. Additionally, the legislation requires the VA to actively reach out to veterans and include assessments for assistive technology, such as personal exoskeleton devices, as part of the annual evaluation.

Moreover, the Veterans STAND Act directs the VA to collaborate with assistance device experts when developing or modifying relevant guidelines. It also mandates reports to Congress regarding the extent to which veterans are being prescribed and utilizing personal exoskeletons issued by the VA.

Representative Bergman, a strong advocate for the bill, recognizes the potential of new technologies like personal exoskeletons in improving the lives of veterans with spinal injuries. He acknowledges the obstacles faced by veterans in obtaining these devices due to bureaucratic hurdles and red tape. Bergman expresses his gratitude for the support of his colleagues in introducing this legislation, which aims to ensure that veterans have the opportunity to be evaluated for and receive these life-changing technologies.

Representative Dingell emphasizes the potential of emerging medical technologies in enhancing the health and quality of life of veterans with spinal cord injuries or disorders. She believes that more needs to be done to educate and assist veterans in accessing these devices. The Veterans STAND Act will require the VA to provide eligible veterans with an annual evaluation, ensuring that those who can benefit from personal exoskeletons and other assistive devices are aware of their options and can easily access the care they deserve.

Chairman Bost highlights the VA's leadership in exoskeleton research and its commitment to providing veterans with the latest emerging technologies. He believes that veterans with spinal trauma injuries should have access to every available tool that can help them live their lives successfully. Bost commends General Bergman for his leadership in introducing the Veterans STAND Act and looks forward to considering the bill in the committee soon.

Representative Brownley emphasizes the life-changing potential of technology for paralyzed veterans. She stresses the importance of ensuring that the VA remains at the forefront of innovation and medical treatment. Brownley expresses her dedication to working with General Bergman, Chairman Bost, and Congresswoman Dingell to advance this legislation on behalf of the nation's veterans.

With the introduction of the Veterans STAND Act, there is hope for improved care and expanded access to new technologies for veterans with spinal injuries. This legislation, supported by veterans' organizations and dedicated representatives, aims to enhance the lives of those who have served our country and provide them with the assistance they need to regain independence and mobility.
