State Representative Cam Cavitt participated in a celebration in Cheboygan, marking the announcement of a $279,000 grant aimed at rehabilitating a two-story building in the city's downtown area. The Michigan Economic Development Corporation awarded this grant as part of its ongoing Revitalization and Placemaking (RAP) program.
"Cheboygan’s downtown has always been the heartbeat of our community, and this RAP grant is an exciting opportunity to breathe new life into it," said Cavitt, R-Cheboygan. "The revitalization of the building will not only enhance our local business scene but also create new housing, making our city more vibrant and welcoming. Projects like this are a testament to the strength and potential of Cheboygan, and I’m thrilled to see this investment in our community."
The renovation project is anticipated to generate a total capital investment of $624,533. Plans for the building include a new ADA-compliant restroom, retail space on the first floor, and two apartment units on the second floor.
The RAP program supports communities aiming to revitalize vacant or underutilized structures as well as historic buildings. It also focuses on developing permanent infrastructure related to traditional downtowns, social zones, outdoor dining areas, and place-based public spaces.
