Betsie Valley District Library recently issued the following announcement.
Turtles go by many names depending on species, location, and size. In the Odawa dialect of Anishinaabemowin(the Anishinaabe language), that's no different!
Here's are a few of the names for turtle:
Mikinaak - Turtle
Mooskadoo - Box Turtle
Mskwaadesi - Painted/Mud Turtle
Mshiikenh - Snapping Turtle

- Turtle shell, also known as carapace, is used to make ceremonial rattles and regalia for the Anishinaabe and other Indigenous groups
- A group of turtles is called a 'bale'
- Snapping turtles have a bite force of 209 N (Newtons)
- Mackinac Island was originally called Mikinaak
