A government shutdown began on October 1 after the Senate did not pass legislation to fund the federal government. U.S. Rep. Jack Bergman, who represents Michigan’s 1st district in Congress, addressed constituents regarding the situation and its impact on services.

Bergman stated, "Last month, I voted for a bipartisan continuing resolution that would have prevented this shutdown and extended government funding through November 21. Unfortunately, Senate Democrats blocked a straightforward measure."

He continued, "The American people deserve better than political games that disrupt critical services and create unnecessary uncertainty for families, Veterans, and small businesses. My focus remains on restoring common sense and fiscal responsibility in Washington so we can fund the government, support our Servicemembers, and deliver real results for Northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula."

Bergman assured residents that his offices are operational during the shutdown to assist with issues related to federal agencies. He said, "Our offices have been — and will continue — working throughout the shutdown to assist constituents with any issues they may be facing." He encouraged those needing help to call his office at 231-944-7633 for assistance with paperwork so cases can be processed when operations resume.

He noted some limitations: "While our Washington, D.C. office remains open to visitors, we are unfortunately unable to schedule tours or process flag requests during the shutdown."

Regarding agency operations:

- Social Security benefits will still be distributed but processing of benefit verifications or disability claims could be delayed.

- Medicare and Medicaid programs will continue as usual.

- The Department of Veterans Affairs’ medical centers and clinics remain open; benefits such as compensation, pensions, education, and housing assistance will still be processed. However, some VA services like regional benefits offices and career counseling may experience disruptions.

- Mail delivery by the U.S. Postal Service is unaffected.

- The Farm Service Agency continues servicing farm loans but processing may slow down.

- TSA operations continue though travelers may face longer wait times at airports.

- Passport processing may take longer than usual; consular services abroad remain available.

"If you have any questions or need assistance, please don’t hesitate to reach out to my office," Bergman said. "My team and I remain committed to serving you throughout this shutdown and to working toward a swift, responsible resolution."

Jack Bergman has served in Congress since 2017 representing Michigan’s 1st District (https://www.congress.gov/member/jack-bergman/B001301). He was born in Shakopee, Minnesota in 1947 and currently lives in Watersmeet. Bergman graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College in 1969 with a BA before attending the University of West Florida.
