The Northern Michigan University (NMU) athletics teams competed in several events over the weekend of October 17-19, recording a mix of wins and losses across different sports.
The NMU football team achieved a significant milestone with a 42-21 win over Roosevelt. The Wildcats set a new program record by rushing for 538 yards, surpassing the previous mark set in 1959. Running backs Noah Dobert and Jahi Wood both surpassed 200 rushing yards, combining for five touchdowns. This performance is among the top single-game rushing efforts in Division II this season.
In hockey, NMU faced No. 19/20 Colorado College in two home games. On Friday, the Wildcats lost 2-1 in overtime despite leading late into the third period. Freshman goaltender Oliver Auyeung-Ashton made 43 saves for a .956 save percentage. Medrick Bolduc scored NMU’s only goal, assisted by Jakub Altrichter. Saturday’s game ended with a 5-2 loss for NMU, but saw first career goals from Mathew Ward and Tobias Pitka.
The volleyball team participated in the Midwest Region Crossover tournament. They dropped matches to Findlay and Quincy on Friday but rebounded with a straight-set victory over Ashland on Saturday. Madison York led with a career-high 15 kills and helped the team achieve its highest hitting percentage of the season at .285.
Women’s soccer suffered two defeats: a 4-0 loss to Saginaw Valley on Friday and a narrow 1-0 loss to Davenport on Sunday. Despite outshooting Davenport and earning more corner kicks, NMU was unable to score against goalkeeper Elizabeth Wolter.
Men’s soccer also faced challenges, losing to Davenport (3-1) on Friday and Saginaw Valley (3-0) on Sunday. Triston Nelson scored his first goal of the season during Friday’s match.
At the Husky Invitational cross country meet, nine NMU runners competed, finishing between third and seventh place led by Paige Anderson with a time of 25:15.2. Monet Argeropoulos also placed in the top ten.
These results reflect an active weekend for Northern Michigan University athletics as teams continue their seasons across multiple sports.
