Madi Szymanski from the Northern Michigan cross country team has been recognized as the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Athlete of the Week. The honor comes after her performance at the Roy Griak Invite in Minneapolis.

Szymanski competed against more than 250 runners and finished in fifth place with a time of 23:15.8. During the race, she was in sixth place at the halfway point and seventh at the final 5K marker before advancing to fifth by the finish line. Her final kilometer was completed in 4:08.2, which was the second fastest among all competitors.

Her efforts contributed to Northern Michigan University's third-place team finish, marking their best result at the Roy Griak Invite since 2016.

Szymanski is expected to lead her team this season following an injury that kept her out in 2024. She previously earned All-Region and First Team All-GLIAC honors in 2023.

"Madi Szymanski of the Northern Michigan cross country team has been named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Athlete of the Week following a stellar race this past weekend at the Roy Griak Invite in Minneapolis."
