State Rep. Curt VanderWall announced that the Michigan House’s recently approved budget proposal includes funding for a new community pool in Shelby. VanderWall had previously requested state support for this project, which is being developed in partnership with Shelby Public Schools.

The planned facility will provide a swim lesson program to address a regional shortage of such offerings. According to VanderWall, “The pool will provide residents with a much-needed recreational hub and host a variety of public programs. It will also serve local seniors through dedicated water aerobics classes, making it a valuable asset to the small, tight-knit farming community.”

VanderWall spoke before a House appropriations subcommittee in support of the pool project several weeks ago. He expressed satisfaction with the broader budget plan, known as the “Value for MI Dollar” plan, saying it prioritizes key needs while respecting taxpayer dollars.

The proposed General Fund budget totals $56.6 billion and covers all state departments except education, which is funded separately. Earlier this year, lawmakers passed a $21.9 billion School Aid budget to support Michigan classrooms at what has been described as record levels. Combined, these budgets total $78.5 billion—a decrease of 3.7% compared to the current fiscal year’s budget and 6% less than Governor Whitmer’s proposed spending plan for 2025-26; it is also 7.2% smaller than the Senate’s proposal.

“Our plan not only spends less, it also spends better,” VanderWall said.

Road infrastructure was another focus of the budget proposal, with $9.1 billion allocated statewide and $3.4 billion directed specifically to local communities without an increase in taxes.

“This budget reflects the priorities of our Northern and West Michigan communities and puts taxpayer dollars to work in ways that matter most,” VanderWall said. “As negotiations with the Senate and governor press on, I am committed to ensuring the final budget is balanced, responsible and prioritized.”

The House-approved proposal now moves to the Senate for further consideration.
