U.S. Representative Jack Bergman and Michigan USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) Director Joel Johnson announced federal relief for farmers and forest landowners in Northern Michigan affected by the late March ice storm. They met with local maple syrup producers to discuss assistance through the Emergency Conservation Program (ECP) and Emergency Forest Restoration Program (EFRP).
Rep. Bergman stated, “This is about getting real help into the hands of our people. Folks who grow our food, manage our forests, and contribute to the economy of Northern Michigan.” He expressed appreciation for Director Johnson’s efforts in securing necessary approvals for these programs.
Director Johnson explained that critical flexibilities were requested to allow producers to begin recovery efforts immediately while retaining access to ECP and EFRP in the coming months. These include waiving onsite inspections and certain application requirements for emergency activities like debris removal and fence repair.
The ECP provides funding to restore agricultural production on land damaged by natural disasters, including specific provisions for Michigan’s maple sap operations. The EFRP assists owners of nonindustrial private forest land with recovery efforts.
Bergman urged affected producers and forest owners to contact their local FSA offices: “If you think these programs might apply to you, don’t wait - reach out today. Help is available.”
