The Northern Michigan University (NMU) women's golf team is gearing up for the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championship this weekend. The event will take place at Stonehedge North in Augusta, Michigan, from April 25 to April 27.
The tournament will feature 18 holes of stroke play on both Friday and Saturday morning. The results will determine the top four teams that will move on to the match play semifinals later on Saturday. The championship match is scheduled for Sunday. Tee times commence at 10 a.m. on Friday, with team pairings based on regional rankings.
NMU will be represented by six athletes: Maddy Martens, Maggie Pietila, Hailey Bolander, Abbie Pietila, Payton Dube, and Gabriella Moreau. Live scoring for Friday and Saturday will be available, and if NMU advances to the top four, further coverage will continue with the medal match stroke play.
The championship field includes nine of the 11 GLIAC member schools, with Michigan Tech and Roosevelt not fielding women's golf programs. Notably, No. 10 ranked Grand Valley State and No. 37 Ferris State, two of the top teams in the region, will participate. Since the tournament's inception in 2001, Grand Valley and Ferris State have dominated, claiming 22 of the 23 championships. Grand Valley is the defending champion, having won five of the last six tournaments, and boasts several top-ranked golfers, including No. 10 Olivia Stoll, last year's GLIAC Women's Golfer of the Year.
The Stonehedge North course, designed by Charles and Jon Scott, is known for its challenging landscape with six par 3's, six par 4's, and six par 5's. Weather forecasts predict rain on Friday with a high of 74°F, while Saturday and Sunday are expected to have sunny skies and temperatures in the mid to upper 60s°F.
In the previous GLIAC Championship, NMU finished in sixth place. They posted scores of +36 (324) and +35 (323) over two days, culminating in a team total of +71 (647). The team averaged 3.53 strokes on par 3s, 4.65 on par 4s, and 5.63 on par 5s, with a weekend tally of 78 pars and 10 birdies.
