NMU sports weekend: Lacrosse, track, and golf competitions from April 17-19, 2025

Northern Michigan University (NMU) Athletics experienced a busy weekend with multiple sports activities taking place from April 17 to April 19, 2025.

On Thursday, April 17, the NMU lacrosse team secured a 22-0 victory against Saginaw Valley State. This game marked the second shutout in the program's history, the previous being a 21-0 win over Concordia-Ann Arbor on February 27, 2023. Goalkeepers Lauren Esposito and Zoe Montgomery each made one save. Taylor Priestley achieved a career-high performance with eight points and five assists. "Her eight points were the most by a Wildcat in a single game since Lakosky set the single-game record (13) against Lewis nine games ago."

In track and field, eleven NMU athletes competed in day one of their California meets. Six personal records were achieved, including efforts by Ciara Ostrenga in the 400m, Dani Van Lente and Emma Sweeney in the 3000m, Skylar Grubb in the 10000m, and Beverly Harper and Lamar Gordon in the 800m.

On Friday, April 18, during the men's golf Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championship, the NMU team placed 9th out of 10 teams after the first round. The team shot +15 overall, with individual scores from Arthur Ylitalo (+2), Russel Sprecher (+3), Tyler Annala (+3), Walter Ylitalo (+7), and Levi Pennala (+12).

Track and Field athletes in California achieved one victory and three personal records across five runners. Alayna Vandegriff secured a win in the triple jump, with Grubb and Van Lente showing strong performances in the 5K, Grubb in the 10000m, Gordon in the 1500m, and Harper in the 800m.

On Saturday, April 19, in men's golf, NMU improved to 8th place overall in the GLIAC Championship with a two-day total of +19 (+15, +4), improving their previous scoring by 11 strokes. A. Ylitalo finished the second round even at 72, concluding the tournament at +2. W. Ylitalo scored a second-round -2 70, ending the tournament at +5. Sprecher ended at +5 for the tournament, Annala finished at +7, and Kyle Maki, competing individually, posted +12.

In track and field, day three of California competitions saw two athletes achieving provisional marks. Ahna Larson set a personal record in the 400m hurdles, and Crystal Walker did so in the 100m hurdles.
