The Northern Michigan University (NMU) men's golf team concluded the first round of the GLIAC Conference Championships in ninth place. The Wildcats recorded a team score of +15 at the Bedford Golf Course, trailing Lake Superior State by four strokes and ahead of Purdue Northwest by four strokes.
To qualify for medal match play, NMU must move up into the top four teams. Grand Valley, ranked No. 9, currently leads the field with a score of -5. Wayne State follows closely at -4, with Roosevelt at -1 and Saginaw Valley at even par. Davenport, No. 48 Ferris State, and Parkside are tied at +1.
The team played par three holes at +14, par four holes at +14, and par five holes at -1. They recorded eight birdies, 51 pars, 28 bogeys, and three double bogeys or worse.
Arthur Ylitalo led NMU with a score of +2, placing 25th overall. He recorded three birdies during his round. Russel Sprecher and Tyler Annala each shot +3, tying for 30th overall. Sprecher finished strong with back-to-back birdies on the sixth and seventh holes.
Walter Ylitalo, the fourth scorer for NMU, completed his round at +7, placing 46th. Levi Pennala, competing individually, finished in 50th place with a score of +12. NMU plans to substitute Pennala with Kyle Maki for the next round.
The top individual performer was Manuel Cue of Grand Valley State University, ranked No. 24, who shot a -4. Among those tied for second at -2 was Pierre Heylen from Roosevelt, who performed better than his season average.
