Senator John Damoose has introduced a new bill aimed at providing scheduling flexibility for schools in Northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula significantly affected by the recent ice storm. The storm, which left over 63,000 residents and institutions without power, has impacted school operations, although all schools have now resumed sessions as of April 14.
Acknowledging concerns from parents about educational disruptions, Damoose, R-Harbor Springs, stated, “I’ve heard from a number of concerned parents regarding what this storm will mean for their kids’ school schedules.” His proposed legislation, Senate Bill 212, would permit the state superintendent to waive up to 10 additional school days for those schools closed due to the storm. These waivers would be available to schools in Alcona, Alpena, Antrim, Charlevoix, Cheboygan, Crawford, Emmet, Mackinac, Montmorency, Oscoda, Otsego, and Presque Isle counties.
“This is a quick, sensible solution, but is also something that will eliminate one of the many concerns these families and schools are currently facing,” said Damoose. He emphasized the need for rapid legislative action to ensure clarity and certainty for schools, parents, and students during the recovery phase.
