The Northern Michigan University (NMU) women's lacrosse team secured a victory against the Davenport Panthers with a score of 9-6 at the Superior Dome. The Wildcats dominated early with a strong first quarter, establishing a 6-1 lead that they maintained throughout the game. Josie Lakosky's performance stood out with six goals and one assist, hitting a season-high of 14 shots.
Lakosky played a crucial role in the team's success, while Maddi Bast and Sophie Langsdale contributed with their scoring, helping the Wildcats gain an upper hand early on. Defensive plays, including stops, caused turnovers, and a robust display from goalkeeper Zoe Montgomery, underpinned the overall performance. Key goals from Abby Sisson and Hannah Jabas sealed the win for NMU.
The Wildcats outperformed the Panthers in shots, tallying 32 attempts compared to the Panthers' 20, with 19 on target for NMU. The game saw both teams evenly matched in ground balls and turnovers, although the Wildcats excelled in completed clears, achieving 18 out of 19. This performance brings NMU's record to 7-3 overall and 2-0 in the GLIAC conference. The Panthers now hold a 5-3 overall record, having lost their first conference game of the season.
The game commenced with Jabas securing possession, which helped set the tone for the Wildcats. The initial surge saw Lakosky scoring twice in quick succession, followed by a goal from Bast and another from Lakosky, ending the first quarter with a commanding lead. Although Davenport attempted to rally in the second and third quarters, NMU managed to counter their efforts effectively.
A decisive fourth-quarter goal by Sisson, assisted by Taylor Priestley, enhanced NMU's lead, and a final goal by Jabas, set up by Lakosky, concluded the match. The Wildcats are next set to face Grand Valley State.
