The Northern Michigan University (NMU) women's lacrosse team secured a 20-9 victory over the Lewis Flyers at the Superior Dome, marking their fifth win of the season. The Wildcats gained momentum with a six-goal streak in the third quarter, leading to a nine-point differential.
Josie Lakosky set a new program record for NMU by scoring seven goals and providing six assists, totaling 13 points in the game. This performance surpassed her previous record of 11 points set earlier this year.
Additional contributions came from Maddi Bast, Sophie Langsdale, and Taylor Priestley, each netting three goals. Abby Sisson, Laine Stanton, Avery Lorinser, and Camryn Mayer also added one goal apiece.
NMU outshot Lewis 28-23 and forced 18 turnovers on the Flyers. They maintained a groundball advantage of 16-10 over their opponents.
The game began with Lewis gaining possession but failing to score due to a save by Zoe Montgomery. Josie Lakosky opened NMU's scoring after evading a defender. Natalie Thomas assisted Lakosky for another goal before Maddi Bast scored as well. Despite Lewis's responses, the first quarter ended tied at 3-3.
In the second quarter, despite Bast receiving a foul that did not result in a goal, NMU retained possession. A pass sequence allowed Taylor Priestley to score with an impressive behind-the-back shot for a 4-4 tie. After exchanging goals with Lewis for several minutes, NMU led 10-7 by halftime following contributions from Bast and Langsdale.
Bast continued her form into the third quarter with an early goal that initiated NMU's six-goal run. By breaking her own record during this period with her eleventh point of the game, Lakosky further extended NMU's lead to 17-8 by the end of the third quarter.
Lakosky later assisted Avery Lorinser for another goal and then scored herself once more before Laine Stanton closed out scoring for NMU in their decisive victory.
Next up for Northern Michigan is an encounter against Indianapolis at Allendale, MI.
