Northern Michigan University women’s wrestling team heads to regional qualifier

The Northern Michigan University women's wrestling team is set to participate in the NCWWC Northwest Regional Qualifier this Saturday, February 22nd. The event will take place at the Merillat Sport & Fitness Center in Adrian, Michigan, starting at 10 a.m. ET.

In the previous season, Northern competed in the regional qualifier held in Naperville, Illinois, where they secured fourth place and saw three of their wrestlers advance to nationals.

Recently, Northern Michigan faced off against Grand Valley State at Vandament Arena but fell short with a score of 27-18. Notable performances included victories by Sophia Bassino (160) via fall at 4:56, Bryn Sandhu (110) by forfeit, Yu Sakamoto (117) with a technical fall of 13-2 at 2:29, and Alissa Caltagirone who achieved a technical fall victory with a score of 12-1 at 2:35.

Amongst the team's standout athletes is Yu Sakamoto who holds a national ranking of tenth in the 117 weight class according to The Open Mat. Sakamoto also claimed the world champion title at the U23 World Championships in Albania last October. Additionally, Alissa Caltagirone is ranked thirteenth in the 138 weight class and Sophia Bassino is fourteenth in the 160 weight class.

Historically, NMU's wrestling program boasts ten regional top-five finishes including Diana Dzasezava's win in 2023. Over its three-year history, it has produced two All-Americans and twelve Scholar All-Americans.
