State Representative Cam Cavitt has issued a statement concerning new legislation designed to assist small businesses and workers in Northeast Michigan. The measures are set to prevent potentially damaging mandates from taking effect.
"Northeast Michigan businesses are going to be able to keep their doors open as a direct result of the hard-fought solutions we approved today," said Cavitt, R-Cheboygan. He referenced discussions with the owner of PAC Sanitation in Onaway, who expressed concerns about potential disruptions in trash service due to the mandates. "Every other industry operating in our communities would have experienced similar disruptions," Cavitt added. He acknowledged that while the compromise might not meet all expectations, it will help prevent increased prices, layoffs, and business closures.
House Bill 4002 aims to ensure all workers can access sick time while simplifying previously complex regulations. This plan permits employers to choose suitable sick time policies and establish guidelines for "no call, no show" situations. Additionally, it offers protection for businesses against unwarranted lawsuits and activist actions.
Senate Bill 8, which passed the House on Wednesday, focuses on tipped workers by maintaining the tip credit at 38% through 2025. It introduces annual wage increases with a cap at 50% of the minimum wage by 2031. The bill also imposes stricter penalties on employers who do not adequately compensate their employees.
