The Northern Michigan University women's wrestling team faced Grand Valley State University in a dual match at Vandament Arena on Saturday night. The Wildcats concluded their season with a 4-4 record after a narrow 27-18 defeat.
The competition began at the 145-pound category, where GVSU's Emily Medford secured a victory over Samatha Chaon by fall at 1:39, giving GVSU an early lead of 5-0. Northern Michigan responded with Sophia Bassino's win at 160 pounds. Bassino overcame a 6-0 deficit to triumph by fall at 4:56, tying the score at five points each.
GVSU regained the lead when Sabrina Nauss defeated Mickaela Keane by fall at the 180-pound class in just 54 seconds, bringing the score to 10-5. Aaliya Grandbery extended the Lakers' advantage to 15-5 with her victory over Kailyn Garrett by fall at the last moment of their bout in the 207-pound category.
Bryn Sandhu reduced NMU's deficit to five points with a win by forfeit at the 110-pound class. Yu Sakamoto further closed the gap with a decisive tech fall win (13-2) over her opponent in just under two and a half minutes, making it 16-14 in favor of GVSU.
Grand Valley State then increased their lead through consecutive wins by fall. Kiley Tabolo overcame Zhivanna Magdaleno at the 124-pound weight class, and Aspen Blasko defeated Sharon Leon in just under a minute at the 131-pound class, resulting in a score of 26-14.
In the final match of the evening, Alissa Caltagirone achieved a technical fall victory (12-1) for NMU, setting the final score at 27-18. Additionally, an exhibition match saw Ruby Joseph lose to Claire Agostini by tech fall (10-0) within one minute.
Northern Michigan will now focus on preparing for their next event—the NCWCC Northwest Regional V Qualifier—scheduled for February 22nd at Adrian College.
