Northern Michigan University's men's basketball team secured a 66-61 victory against Wayne State Warriors on Saturday. Jackson Dudek led the Wildcats with a season-high 18 points, shooting 72.7% from the field and contributing six rebounds, a block, and a steal. Dudek's performance has been notable since he joined the starting lineup four games ago, averaging 15.8 points and 7.3 rebounds per game.
Julien Smith added 14 points while Dylan Kuehl contributed 12 for NMU. The Wildcats shot 41.4% from the field compared to Wayne State's 44.7%. Rob Lee Jr. of Wayne State was the game's top scorer with 19 points.
A significant factor in NMU's win was their ball control, committing only four turnovers while forcing Wayne State into 14 turnovers, leading to a scoring advantage of 15-8 in points off turnovers.
The Wildcats started strong with an early lead, thanks to Dudek's efforts, including an offensive rebound that set up a three-pointer by Smith. NMU built their lead to as much as 22-7 in the first half and maintained a double-digit advantage at halftime with a score of 31-20.
In the second half, NMU extended their lead to its largest at 44-28 before Wayne State narrowed it down to four points midway through the period. However, NMU responded with crucial plays and free throws by Smith in the final seconds secured their win.
This victory improves Northern Michigan's record to 16-6 overall and ties them for second place in the GLIAC standings at 10-4 after Ferris State lost their game.
NMU is set for two important home games next week against Lake Superior State on February 13 and Ferris State on February 15 for Senior Day.
