FOIA Request to Kalkaska County Election Division Regarding Upcoming Election Candidates on February 5, 2025.
As part of our ongoing commitment to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, we at North Michigan News have submitted a request under the Michigan Freedom of Information Act § 15.231 et seq. This request, sent to the Kalkaska County Election Division, seeks detailed information about all candidates running in the upcoming election.
Specifically, we have asked for an electronic list of all candidates which includes their first, middle and last names; the office they are running for; jurisdiction of the office; and party affiliation. In addition to this, we have also requested contact information for each candidate such as their address, phone number and email address.
As a media organization, access to public records is essential for us to fulfill our professional responsibilities. These include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public. Given our role in disseminating information, we believe we are eligible for a fee waiver as a media professional.
We will continue our efforts in ensuring transparency and accountability in local government affairs through diligent reporting. We await a positive response from the Kalkaska County Election Division regarding our request.
