With ten games remaining in the regular season, the Northern Michigan men's basketball team is preparing for a significant weekend. They will host Grand Valley State Lakers and Davenport Panthers at their home venue. The Wildcats are looking to recover from recent losses against Ferris State and Lake Superior State.
The Wildcats have a record of 12-6 overall and 6-4 in conference play. They will face Grand Valley State on Thursday, January 30, at 7:30 p.m., followed by a match against Davenport on Saturday, February 1, at 2 p.m. Both games are accessible via the FloSports app or can be heard on 100.3 The Point.
Northern Michigan coach Matt Majkrzak commented on the upcoming matches: "It's going to take a better effort on defense if we are going to beat them here. We played pretty well on offense down there but lately our offense hasn't been as good…so we have to go into it with the mentality that if we don't play well on offense, how do we still win."
Dylan Kuehl leads Northern Michigan's scoring efforts with an average of 15.3 points per game and has reached over 1,000 career points this season. Julien Smith and Sam Privet also contribute significantly to the team's performance.
Grand Valley State comes into this matchup riding a four-game winning streak and boasts a solid road record this season. Trevor Smith Jr., recently named GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week, is a key player for the Lakers.
Davenport has struggled this season with a conference record of 1-9 but has shown potential with an upset victory over Michigan Tech earlier in January.
The Wildcats previously faced both teams earlier this month, securing victories against each by eight points.
Earlier in October, Northern Michigan played an exhibition game against Michigan State in front of a large crowd at the Superior Dome Showdown, marking a historic event for the program.
