Northern Michigan University's men's basketball team faced a challenging matchup against Ferris State University, ranked eighth nationally, on Thursday night. The Wildcats fought hard but ultimately fell short in a close contest, losing 85-79.

The game was tightly contested in the final 15 minutes, with both teams exchanging leads multiple times. Northern held advantages of 56-53 and 73-71 during this period. However, they struggled to make defensive stops in the last three minutes and missed crucial three-point attempts in the final seconds, which hampered their chances of an upset.

Northern's offensive effort was commendable, with Dylan Kuehl leading the way by scoring 19 points despite facing foul trouble throughout the game. Sam Privet contributed 12 points while Julien Smith added 11. Cal Klesmit scored nine points and achieved a career-high seven rebounds. Smith also provided six assists. For Ferris State, Ethan Erickson led five players who scored in double figures with his 20-point performance.

In terms of shooting accuracy, Northern Michigan hit 40.6% from the field compared to Ferris State's 48.3%. The Wildcats managed to sink nine three-pointers from six different players, with Klesmit hitting three of them. They excelled in rebounding as well, securing a 43-37 edge over Ferris State and dominating offensive boards with a margin of 13-4, resulting in a significant advantage in second-chance points at 17-4.

The game started slowly for Northern Michigan as they fell behind early due to a cold shooting streak but found momentum midway through the first half with an impressive 11-0 run that gave them their largest lead at 29-23. However, Ferris State closed out the first half strong and led by three at halftime.

In the second half, Ferris State extended their lead early on before Northern tied it up again at 51-all with twelve minutes left to play. The Wildcats briefly regained control before being overtaken by back-to-back threes from Jaxson Whitaker for Ferris State.
