Northern Michigan women’s wrestling team to compete at Alma College Open

The Northern Michigan women's wrestling team is set to participate in the Alma College Open this weekend. The event will be held on Sunday, January 19, beginning at 11 a.m.

In their last competition of the new year, NMU emerged victorious against Alma with a score of 32-16 during duals at the Dome. This season, Northern has achieved a 3-3 record in duals, including two wins over Alma.

Notably, Yu Sakamoto is ranked 12th nationally in the 117 weight class according to The Open Mat. Sakamoto recently earned a world champion title at the U23 World Championships in Albania. Other team members include Alissa Caltagirone, ranked 15th in the 145 weight class, and Ozioma Ogu, who holds the 20th spot at 207.

Throughout its history, NMU's program has secured ten regional top-5 finishes and produced two All-Americans and twelve Scholar All-Americans over three years. Diana Dzasezava notably won a regional top-5 finish in 2023.
