A competitive match on Monday night concluded with the Northern Michigan women's basketball team securing a 60-56 victory over Roosevelt University. This game marked the first meeting between the two schools, with Northern's win representing their second consecutive triumph.
Despite missing top scorer Jacy Weisbrod for the fourth straight game, Alyssa Nimz led Northern with 18 points, and Mackenzie Holzwart contributed 12 points and seven rebounds. Roosevelt's Jayla Turchin topped all scorers with 19 points, alongside nine rebounds and four steals. Luke Malinka also scored in double figures for Roosevelt with 11 points.
The Wildcats shot 44% from the field compared to Roosevelt's 35%. Roosevelt excelled at free throws, making 83% of their attempts against Northern's 52.6%. NMU led in assists but committed more turnovers than RU.
The game began with CJ Romero scoring a layup for NMU, followed by a swift response from Roosevelt. The teams exchanged leads throughout the first quarter until Kaitlyn Parker put Roosevelt ahead briefly before ending the quarter up by one point.
Kayla Tierney scored Northern’s first three-pointer in the second quarter, tying the game through Sydney Whitehouse’s efforts. Despite opportunities for both teams, Roosevelt maintained a narrow lead at halftime.
In the second half, Mackenzie Holzwart initiated scoring for NMU while Luka Malinka extended Roosevelt’s lead momentarily. A six-point run allowed NMU to tie again and eventually regain an edge they hadn’t held since early in the match.
Roosevelt fought back late in the game, briefly reclaiming a lead before Holzwart's triple restored NMU’s advantage. With seconds remaining, Addison Pytleski secured victory by converting crucial free throws after initial struggles from the line.
This win improved Northern Michigan's record to 11-3 overall and strengthened their league standing at 5-1. Meanwhile, Roosevelt fell to a record of 4-8 overall and 2-4 within conference play.
Northern Michigan is set to face Wayne State next on Thursday evening at home.
