State Representative Cam Cavitt has joined 52 other legislators in sending a bipartisan letter to Scott Bowen, Director of the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), seeking clarification on a proposed solar installation near Gaylord. The plan involves clearing 420 acres of state forest for solar panel installations.

Cavitt expressed his disapproval, stating, “I was disgusted to hear the news that the DNR plans to destroy over 400 acres of forest near Gaylord to make way for solar installations.” He further criticized the targeting of prime agricultural land bordering a trout stream, describing it as sacrificing natural resources and ecosystems.

Public reaction has been strong since the project details emerged last week. In response, RWE Clean Energy announced it would not pursue expansion onto the state forest. Initially, RWE Clean Energy had requested that the DNR make this land available for solar farms.

Cavitt voiced concerns about Northern Michigan being treated as vacant land by Lansing without local input. “It’s inexcusable and a direct attack on the people and communities who live here,” he said. He emphasized potential damage to wildlife and habitats and called for serious consequences for the DNR.

The legislators have also asked the DNR to disclose information on other public lands leased for private green-energy projects.
