Northern Michigan University's women's basketball team is set to continue its undefeated streak as they travel for two non-conference games this weekend. The Wildcats, currently holding an 8-0 record, will face Northwood on Friday, December 20 at 3 p.m., followed by a match against Ashland on Sunday, December 22 at 2 p.m.
The Wildcats are ranked No. 22 in the WBCA poll and No. 13 in the D2CSC poll. Fans can listen to the games on 100.3 The Point, with Casey Ford providing commentary for Friday's game and Garrett Searight for Sunday's.
Northern Michigan has made significant achievements this season, being one of only ten undefeated teams remaining in Division II out of 290. Their performance ranks them high nationally in several categories including defensive rebounds per game and assist/turnover ratio.
Jacy Weisbrod stands out with an average of 15.4 points per game and is leading the conference with her three-pointers. Sarah Newcomer follows with an average of 11 points per game and ranks high in assists within the league.
Head coach Casey Thousand has led Northern Michigan to a strong record since taking charge, guiding them to their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2019 last year.
Northwood enters the game with a record of 2-9 but boasts a notable victory over Ashland earlier this season. They have been strong defensively, ranking nationally in blocks and steals per game.
Ashland presents another challenge as they hold a No. 21 national ranking with a solid track record both historically and this season. They are known for their scoring defense and balanced offense featuring key players like Zoe Miller and Hayley Smith.
The upcoming matches will test Northern Michigan's current form as they aim to extend their unbeaten run further into the season.
