State Rep. John Roth | Michigan House Republicans
State Representative John Roth has voted to maintain work requirements for the Healthy Michigan program. These requirements are currently inactive due to a U.S. Supreme Court ruling but have gained attention following recent Republican electoral victories.
House Bill 4224, which seeks to repeal these work requirements, passed the House along party lines. Roth expressed his perspective, stating: “This isn’t about forcing people to work, this is about encouraging folks to explore opportunities that will equip them with the skills they need to live fruitful lives free of government intervention.”
The law originally came into effect in 2020 and required able-bodied adults on Medicaid to engage in at least 80 hours of work per month. This was halted by a court order in March 2020. If the Supreme Court reverses this order, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services could potentially reinstate these requirements.
Roth commented on the political dynamics, noting: “It shouldn’t surprise anyone that Democrats are running to get rid of this law right after significant Republican victories.” He expressed hope for a reversal by the Supreme Court.
The repealed requirements included several exemptions and were not limited solely to employment. They could be fulfilled through various activities such as education training or community service.
The bill now proceeds to the Senate for further discussion.
