Get ready for Halloween in Traverse City with a series of community events catering to all ages. The City has announced several activities leading up to the holiday, beginning with the Halloween Open House at the Governmental Center on October 25th. From 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm, families can enjoy trick-or-treating and festive activities while meeting local government staff.

A new event, Gourdoween, will take place from October 22nd to October 31st. Various departments from the City and Grand Traverse County will compete by creating gourd dioramas. The public is invited to view these displays at the Governmental Center and vote for their favorite.

On November 9th, the Pumpkin Smashing Extravaganza will be held in collaboration with Carter’s Compost and SEEDS. This sustainability-focused event encourages residents to smash pumpkins at activity stations at the City's composting unit on Beitner Road from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. Pumpkins can be dropped off starting November 1st.

The City aims to divert one ton of pumpkins from landfills through this initiative as part of its Compost and Food Waste Reduction project. With a significant amount of pumpkins contributing to methane emissions when disposed of improperly, composting offers an environmentally friendly alternative.

Halloween itself will occur on Thursday, October 31st, within city limits from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Residents participating are asked to adhere strictly to these times by turning their lights on or off accordingly.

Safety remains a priority during this festive season. "The Traverse City Fire Department reminds everyone to stay extra mindful of increased pedestrian traffic," urging drivers to slow down and remain vigilant for children who may unexpectedly cross streets.

To ensure safety during Halloween festivities, the Traverse City Police Department has provided guidelines for costume safety and trick-or-treating precautions.
