NMU athletics sees mixed results across various sports during busy weekend

Northern Michigan University (NMU) athletics teams had a busy weekend from November 7 to November 9, with several competitions across different sports.

On Thursday, the women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw against No. 19 Grand Valley State University (GVSU). Maria Storm scored a late equalizer, keeping the Wildcats one point ahead of the Lakers in the GLIAC standings.

Friday saw NMU's wrestling team secure a dominant 40-10 victory over Alma. Victories were claimed by Zhivanna Magdaleno, Samantha Chaon, Alissa Caltagirone, Sophia Bassino, Clarissa Wangen, and Ozioma Ogu in their respective weight classes. The volleyball team faced a tough challenge against No. 1 Ferris State and lost 0-3 despite Jacqueline Smith contributing 13 kills. In women's basketball, NMU achieved a narrow overtime win over Thomas More with all ten players scoring points; Jacy Weisbrod led with 11 points and eight rebounds while Alyssa Hill added ten points and nine rebounds. The hockey team suffered a heavy defeat to Lake Superior State with a scoreline of 0-5. Grayden Slipec led all skaters in shots but could not find the net. Men's basketball enjoyed success with a comfortable 78-59 win over Maryville as Brian Parzych scored 15 points and Dylan Kuehl added ten.

Saturday's events included cross country finishing eleventh at the NCAA Midwest Regional after making significant progress in the final stretch; Gianna Hoving earned All-Region accolades by finishing eighteenth. The wrestling team had mixed results, defeating D'Youville College decisively but falling narrowly to Division I Sacred Heart University. In men's swimming during their double-dual meet against Findlay and Wayne State, NMU beat Findlay but fell short against Wayne State despite seven first-place finishes and fifteen podium placements; William LaCount secured multiple top finishes alongside Gabriel Fulconi and Wyatt Dickman. Women's swimming excelled by winning both matchups convincingly against Findlay and Wayne State; Elena Curti stood out with multiple victories along with Camilla Carbone's strong performances in backstroke events while Abbie Harned swept diving categories.

In football action on Saturday night against Davenport University ended in disappointment for NMU losing out by fifty-two points thirty-one - however notable was achieving three hundred twenty-four rushing yards marking highest single-game tally since two thousand eighteen also recording most game-points past two seasons thirty-one
