Northern Michigan wrestling splits duals against D'Youville and Sacred Heart

The Northern Michigan wrestling team experienced mixed results in their duals held in Adrian, Michigan on Saturday. The team secured a decisive victory against D'Youville University with a score of 36-6 but narrowly lost to Sacred Heart with a final score of 27-21.

Key performances came from Zhivanna Magdaleno, Alissa Caltagirone, and Clarissa Wangen, who each won both of their matches during the event. Additionally, four other Wildcats achieved one win each.

In the matchup against D'Youville University, Northern Michigan started strong at 117 pounds with Yu Sakamoto achieving a technical fall over Rebecca Ridling. Zhivanna Magdaleno followed by defeating Annika Lopez by fall at 124 pounds. Sharon Leon continued the momentum with a tech fall victory at 131 pounds against Alexis Brua.

D'Youville's sole win came at 138 pounds when Madison Wellen pinned Samantha Chaon. However, Northern Michigan quickly regained control with Alissa Caltagirone winning by fall at 145 pounds and Sophia Bassino doing the same at 160 pounds. Clarissa Wangen added another win for NMU by pinning Zoe Kip at 180 pounds. Ozioma Ogu closed out the dual with a decision victory over Riley Wentlent at 207 pounds.

The contest against Sacred Heart began with SHU's Tiffany Stoshak claiming a win via forfeit at 103 pounds. Sacred Heart continued to gain points as Lauren defeated Trinity Valentin by fall and Nohea Moniz edged Yu Sakamoto in a close match at 117 pounds.

Zhivanna Magdaleno earned her second victory of the day by pinning Valerie Turgeon. Sharon Leon also secured another win for NMU by defeating Elleahna Anderson by fall. Despite these efforts, Sacred Heart responded strongly with Madison Canales pinning Samantha Chaon and Love Daley winning over Sophia Bassino.

Clarissa Wangen maintained her unbeaten record for the day by overcoming Jacklyn Smith by fall. In the decisive final bout, Madeline Hodges clinched victory for Sacred Heart by pinning Ozioma Ogu.

Northern Michigan will remain in Adrian to participate in the Adrian Invite starting tomorrow morning.
