The Northern Michigan University (NMU) hockey team faced a challenging start to their conference play, falling 3-0 to Michigan Tech. The Wildcats' head coach, Dave Shyiak, emphasized the team's positive aspects despite the loss. "We continue to build on the positives, and I think the positives were we had a lot of grade-A chances," Shyiak noted in his post-game press conference.

The Wildcats managed nine shots from close range but failed to capitalize on these opportunities. Shyiak acknowledged this, saying, "This was the most grade-A chances that we've had in any of our games this season, and we just have to convert on those."

Michigan Tech scored first during even strength play in the opening period. Their two additional goals came during power plays in the second period. NMU was unable to score despite having one power play opportunity late in the third period when they were already down by three goals.

"The game changes when you aren't playing catch-up hockey; when you're playing catch-up hockey you end up chasing the game," Shyiak remarked about their performance. He praised his team's scoring opportunities but stressed the need for conversion.

Ryan Ouellette, NMU's goaltender, made 38 saves with a .927 save percentage, continuing his strong performance streak by making over 30 saves in each of his six games this season.

Looking ahead, NMU will travel west for a rematch against Michigan Tech in Houghton. Coach Shyiak's message for his team is clear: "Just stick with it. We can't get frustrated; when you're frustrated it sucks all of your energy out of you and you can't make plays."

The Wildcats aim to regroup and improve their offensive execution as they prepare for another face-off against their conference rivals.
