Northern Michigan wrestling begins new season with Green & Gold Intrasquad

The Northern Michigan University wrestling team is set to kick off its 2024-25 season with the Green and Gold Intrasquad event on Saturday. The event, scheduled for 1 p.m. in the Superior Dome, will be free for attendees and offer a preview of the new squad.

The lineup for the event includes several matchups: Danielle Lopez vs. Sophia Bassino, Ruby Joseph vs. Mickaela Keane, Sharon Leon vs. Sam Chaon, Bryn Sandhu vs. Trinity Valentin, Kailyn Garrett vs. Ozi Ogu, Andrea Zunun vs. Sophia Bassino, Ruby Joseph vs. Abby Swanson, Bryn Sandhu vs. Sara Schroder, Sam Chaon vs. Alissa Caltagirone, Andrea Zunun vs. Danielle Lopez, and Abby Swanson vs. Mickaela Keane.

NMU's wrestling program enters its fourth season this year and has already achieved significant accomplishments in its brief history. Sophomore Yu Sakamoto recently gained international recognition by earning the world champion title at the U23 World Championships held in Albania.

The Wildcats are currently ranked #24 in the NCAA Women's Preseason Coaches Poll released by the NWCA (National Wrestling Coaches Association). Notably, sophomores Alissa Caltagirone (145 lbs) and Zhivanna Magdaleno (124 lbs) have been ranked within the top ten of their respective weight classes after competing at Nationals last season.

In addition to these achievements, NMU has secured ten regional top-five finishes with Diana Dzasezava winning in 2023 and has produced two All-Americans as well as twelve Scholar All-Americans throughout its three-year history.

Tony DeAnda received recognition as Regional Coach of the Year in 2023.
